Tiger Patrol Teams

In highly sensitive areas, where there is a constant danger of conflict between man and animal, specially predators like the Tiger, teams were organised who would patrol the areas at night.
This project was successfully conducted in Sundarbans, West Bengal and in Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh.
These teams were comprised of youth from the local communities. The advantage of this was that these youths knew the area very well and were aware of the land, they were being gainful employment and a chance for an alternative income.
The teams would patrol at night when the chance of a predator’s presence was highest. This patrolling was almost an instant success as it kept away the predators, it reduced loss of life and it also served to minimise destruction of crops and property. Livestock were saved from being attacked and it also curbed the aggression of the people whose first instinct was to kill any predator.
