Most rural areas are not well lighted like urban places or cities. Villages and settlements in remote locations are mostly dark, the unpaved roads don’t have lighting. The only light seen would be from homes and shops. People mostly rely on torches when travelling after dark.
Travelling after dark is unwise if the village is near a forest or in close proximity to wildlife. Torches are not reliable as their lighting is limited in range.
Solar light posts are ideal in areas like these. They illuminate a wide area, are energy efficient and cost effective in the long run. Due to its energy being drawn from the sun, these lights don’t incur any running cost which can be an issue in rural, underprivileged villages.
Saving Tiger Society has installed over 40 such Solar Light posts around various villages in Sundarbans. This project is conducted on a need basis. Regular reviews and surveys are conducted after which a decision is taken.
